Fashion model Jourdan Dunn once said, "I want to see us get to a place where seeing a black girl, anywhere, is not such a big deal. Why can't it just be the norm to see black models in campaigns, covers, and runways?" Representation means everything, especially to a child. Most magazines are scarce in representing black women, but black women continue to prove that they are a force in the fashion industry.
Through self-love, black women show that their beauty will always be adored, and it doesn't need to be approved or accepted by anyone else. Let's take a look at some women who were on the cover of one of the largest fashion magazines in the world- Vogue Magazine.
Beverly Johnson
Beverly was the first African American model to be placed on the cover of American Vogue in 1974. After her groundbreaking cover, she used her platform to open the doors for other black models in the industry.
"There's not a hair extension or a makeup artist that can make me feel the way I feel when I give back." -Beverly Johnson
Naomi Campbell
It is no surprise that Naomi is a walking legend. She has dedicated her career supporting black models, and is an advocate for the African fashion industry.
"There is always work to to be done. You should never sit and think that everything's fine. You always have to maintain and challenge yourself." - Naomi Campbell
Rihanna Fenty
As a fashion icon and the creator of the luxury brand Fenty, Rihanna has shown throughout her career that she is not only a successful business woman, but also a strong advocate for the black community. By redefining what is "beautiful" in the fashion industry, Rihanna is a powerhouse.
"I think I can inspire a lot of women to be themselves and that is half the battle. Just be yourself, it's the easiest thing to be. Black girls, we just on another level." -Rihanna Fenty
The journey for equal representation in fashion is not over, but we are starting to see growth in our community. Black-owned brands such as Pyer Moss and Stevie Boi are successfully creating empires in the industry, and more black women are showing up on the cover of Vogue Magazine on a global scale. It is time for a global takeover.
