Coco Chanel: The Innovator with a Questionable History

Updated: Mar 29, 2023

French designer, Gabrielle “Coco” Bonheur Chanel, was a woman of the future. Her classic innovations of the Chanel suit, costume jewelry, and “little black dress” are a few reasons why her brand continues to be a leading force in haute couture. With personal experience and the ability to create designs with the customer in mind, Coco eliminated design concepts that hindered a woman’s comfort– such as the corset.

“Luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury.” -Coco Chanel

Coco revolutionized what the consumer is really looking for when they go out for an evening of shopping. In the 1920’s, the brand grew at a rapid pace and Chanel became a staple in the luxury industry. Perfume “Chanel No.5” is still one of the most well-known creations in the world. On the other hand, the history behind Chanel is still questionable till this day.

In “Sleeping with the Enemy: Coco Chanel’s Secret War”, journalist Hal Vaughan presents convincing evidence that Coco was also a Nazi intelligence operative who used her connections to live comfortably throughout her life; a story that is unknown to many people who do not follow the industry.

With the motive to free her nephew from the German prisoner camp, and use the Nazi’s Aryanization laws to gain control over her perfume empire (which was held by the Jewish Wertheimer brothers), the story of Coco Chanel takes a dark turn. With the lack of evidence and witnesses, Hal Vaughan’s accusations weren’t fully proven and Coco was freed. Read more on the story and decide for yourself if Chanel is the brand that you want to wear; seeing customers wear the designers clothing is the best form of marketing after all.
