Culture in Clothing: Deep-Rooted and Evident

Updated: Mar 29, 2023

Fashion is about following seasonal trends and upcoming styles, but traditional attire is more than just an outfit. In African cultures, families teach you that your attire represents the history, development, and growth of your people. I was curious to learn what traditional attire meant to African men who shared a sense of cultural responsibility.

"Ghana Adinkra cloth, or Kente, or Entuma was originally founded by the Ashanti people. It was originally made to be worn for royalty, religious gatherings, and important celebrations. What I add to express my style is actually wearing it how it is worn back home; wearing beaded necklaces and slippers (Ahenema). I wear as much gold as possible to symbolize that I am indeed a king in my own way, and I live by being strong-hearted."

" Traditional Nigerian garments hold weight in itself, and sporting such clothing gives one a sense of courage and pride. In the picture, I added a traditional neck piece to represent a level of status and ranking. -Chinedu (@just.right)

As a Ghanaian man, I feel empowered by my traditional clothing because it reflects a sense of nobility, importance and wealth. Whenever I wear my attire, I represent the elegance and history of my people, and it makes me feel like "The King".

Representation matters, and I am excited to see more cultural representation in the industry.
