Politics in Apparel

Updated: Mar 29, 2023

In light of the Black Lives Matter movement, it's important to highlight the designers, athletes, and celebrities who have openly stood up against social injustice by making renowned statements in their clothing. Let's look at some influencers who have used their platform to advocate change and promote justice.

Andre 3000 made a powerful statement with his jumpsuit that stated, "Across cultures, dark people suffer most. Why?" With a sold tag on the left side of his jumpsuit, his clothing revealed a common issue in America-unawareness. While thousands of people go to see Outcast's concerts in support of their music, the support for the black community itself was not shown.

Lebron James, I Can't Breathe Shirt

Basketball superstar Lebron James is another advocate for the Black Lives Matter movement. He and several other basketball players made a monumental statement by wearing their "I can't breathe" shirts to bring light to the wrongful murder of Eric Garner. With backlash from reporters and officials alike, Lebron and many athletes reminded the world that before the are athletes, they are black people who will vocalize their opinions without fear.

Marc Jacobs

Fashion lines across the world have joined in solidarity with black people who suffer from police brutality. Notable fashion designer Marc Jacobs made it very clear that the current issues regarding inequality and police brutality in the country are far more important than his stores. With the murder of George Floyd, a revolution has begun.

"A life can not be replaced. Black Lives Matter." - Marc Jacobs

The fashion industry is inspired by everyday life. With a revolution in place, these influencers are battling racism, homophobia, and prejudice. This is the beauty of the industry, and the perfect time to take note of the designers and brands who are quiet during this time. I encourage everyone to stop buying from companies that do not show where they stand. Remember, under all the clothing and the glamour, we are human. Be on the side of humanity.
